Introduction to Newborn Baby Photography

Newborn photography is a special way to capture the precious first moments of a newborn baby’s life. From yawns and stretches to peaceful sleeps, preserving memories that families treasure for years to come. A professional newborn photographer plays a vital role in guiding you through this journey, ensuring that the photos are not only beautiful but also safe for the baby. This type of photography focuses on taking baby photos that highlight the tiny features of the newborn, such as their delicate face, hands, and feet. Capturing these moments requires patience, creativity, and keen attention to detail, making every newborn session unique and deeply personal.

Creative Ideas

For my newborn photos I try to find inspiration in a variety of places. Preparing for a session with a new baby involves creating a safe and baby comfortable environment, ensuring the little one feels secure and relaxed. Firstly I will ask the parents what colours they prefer and will compliment their home. I have a selection different coloured blankets with co-ordinating props to choose from. Once I have their preferred colour choices I will select props that complement each other for the session. As well as colour I will add some lovely textures like soft mohair bonnets and woollen wraps. Incorporating sentimental items, such as family heirlooms or handmade gifts, can make the session even more meaningful and unique. I like to start photographing the baby with simple poses that are safe and easy for both the baby and parents. During the session, I photograph the baby using both natural and posed setups to capture a variety of beautiful photographs. I also gather creative ideas for each session to ensure every photoshoot is unique and inspiring.

Preparation for the Photoshoot

Preparation is key to a successful newborn photoshoot. This includes choosing a professional newborn photographer and gathering the necessary props and outfits. The ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is within the first two weeks of life, when babies tend to be in a deep sleep and are easier to pose. Keeping the environment warm and cozy is essential to ensure the baby is comfortable, which allows for more natural poses. Additionally, using soft lighting, such as natural light or studio lighting, helps create gentle and flattering newborn portraits that capture the baby’s natural beauty.

Working with Light

Natural light is a popular choice for newborn photography, especially window light in the morning or late afternoon, which creates a warm and gentle glow. Studio lighting, on the other hand, offers more control and consistency by using softboxes and reflectors to highlight the baby’s features. Skilled photographers work with different lighting setups to create a variety of effects, ranging from soft and natural to more dramatic and polished. The right lighting can make a significant difference in the quality and atmosphere of the photos, effectively capturing the baby’s essence.

Photography Techniques

Newborn photography involves a variety of techniques that include capturing candid shots, experimenting with different angles, and focusing on specific details to highlight the baby’s unique features. Skilled photographers use their camera settings effectively, adjusting shutter speed and aperture to ensure high-quality images. Additionally, editing and post-processing play an essential role in enhancing the photos while maintaining the natural texture and charm of the newborn, resulting in beautiful and memorable images.

Newborn Photography Posing Ideas

Newborn poses can range from simple and natural to more creative and elaborate, depending on the photographer’s style and the baby’s comfort level.

Classic Poses

Classic poses, such as the froggy pose and the potato sack, are timeless and adorable, while more modern poses, like the simple wrap, add variety to the photos. Photographers should be skilled in gently guiding the baby into different poses, always ensuring their safety and comfort. The ultimate goal is to capture beautiful, natural images that showcase the baby’s unique personality and spirit.

Candid and lifestyle shots

Candid and lifestyle newborn shots are popular, but I want to clarify that I do not offer lifestyle newborn sessions or candid photography as part of my services. My focus is on carefully posed newborn photography that prioritises safety and timeless images. While candid moments can be beautiful, my approach is to create classic, controlled portraits that highlight the baby’s delicate features in a safe, studio environment.

Newborn Photography Props

I love shopping on Etsy for different props and one of my favourite vendors is Adris Little Cuties. I also look for cozy knitted wraps and hats and try to co-ordinate the colours with existing props. When using wraps, I often use a simple wrap technique, which is easy for beginners and helps keep the baby calm while creating beautiful images. Sometimes I will make my own props and even taught myself to how knit layering blankets and hats. I adore Wool and the Gang for their soft chunky wool and pastel colours. I also hand make my own felted layers and needle felt little hearts in different colours. Incorporating sentimental items, such as family heirlooms or special gifts, can add a personal touch and make each session more meaningful.

I’m always looking for new props for my newborn photography sessions. There are many amazing specialist newborn prop suppliers in the UK such as Newborn Baby Posing Ltd but I often find inspiration in unexpected places such as home furnishing stores. Exploring different stores often sparks creative ideas for new props and setups. One of my favourite go to props is a gorgeous little wooden box that I found in the home department at TK Maxx.

Newborn Photographers Who Inspire

I follow some amazing photographers who also inspire me, including professional photographers whose expertise and techniques influence my work, such as Claire Elliot of Forever Memories. Having trained with Claire she taught me how to co-ordinate and layer props to add texture and detail to my newborn photography sessions. Working with a few simple props means I can switch them up between shots to give you a few looks without even having to move the baby. Capturing a few photos with different props ensures families have a variety of cherished memories from each session.
