A newborn photoshoot is a special opportunity to preserve these early memories, and with thoughtful planning and preparation, you can ensure a relaxed and meaningful session that truly reflects your family's unique story.

Introduction to Newborn Photography

Welcoming a new baby into your family is a truly special time, and a newborn photography session is the perfect way to capture those fleeting first moments. Newborn photography allows you to preserve the tiny details and tender connections that you’ll cherish forever. Preparing for your newborn photography session is key to ensuring you get beautiful, timeless photos of your newborn. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know to prepare for your session, from scheduling and session details to helpful tips for a smooth and enjoyable shoot. Whether you’re a new parent or adding to your growing family, these tips will help you make the most of your newborn photography experience.

Booking a newborn photo shoot

When you book your newborn photography session, I will add your due date to my diary. Once your baby arrives, we will arrange a suitable date for you to attend and I will send you some helpful information on how best to prepare for your session. It is important to schedule your newborn photography session within the first two weeks after birth to ensure optimal timing and results.

Scheduling the Newborn Photo Session

One of the most important steps in planning your newborn photography session is scheduling it at the right time. It’s best to book your newborn photography session during your last trimester, so that I can reserve a spot around your due date. Once your baby arrives, you can confirm the exact date for your photography session. Most photographers recommend holding newborn sessions within the first two weeks after birth, as babies are typically sleepier and more content during this period, making it easier to capture those adorable, curled-up poses. By scheduling early, you ensure I am available and you don’t miss the window for those precious newborn photos.

Session Details

A typical newborn photography session lasts between two to three hours, giving plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and taking breaks as needed. I will guide you through the process, making sure both you and your baby are comfortable and relaxed throughout the session. Before your newborn photography session, we will discuss your preferences for your session. You can let me know what types of photos you love, any special props or outfits you’d like to include, and whether you want family or sibling shots. Open communication helps me tailor the session to your family’s needs, ensuring you get a beautiful collection of photos to treasure.

Awake time for newborn photoshoot

The most important thing that I advise is to have 1-2 hours of awake time with the baby just before the session. Even if you think that your baby sleeps all the time it is important that you follow this step. This helps ensure a sleepy baby during the session, which makes posing and capturing beautiful images much easier. When transitioning from one pose to the next I will be moving the baby, and if they have had no awake time prior to the session they will not be in a deep enough sleep to allow me to do this. If you have a long car journey to my photography studio it is best if you try to keep the baby awake during this time as well so that they can fall into a nice deep sleep when they get here. To help keep the baby calm and relaxed I use white noise as well as some special soothing techniques that I have learned over the years.

Feeding your baby before a newborn photography session

I also request that you feed baby just before we begin the session, as this is important for their comfort and cooperation. A full tummy, along with a nice warm room, helps your little one become content and sleepy, making it easier for them to settle into a deep sleep. At certain stages within the first few weeks, your little one will go through growth spurts and may feed more than they usually do. This is normal, and I allow plenty of time for feeding breaks during the session to give them a top up if they need it, ensuring they stay comfortable. A full belly is key to a successful and smooth session.

Being photographed with your baby and picking colours

If you would like to be photographed with your baby during your baby photography session, I have some helpful advice on what to wear. Choose a simple, comfortable outfit for both parents and baby, and consider wearing solid colours to keep the focus on your family unit. For family photos, choose neutral tones and simple outfits that coordinate well without distracting from your newborn. For your newborn, I will provide soft, natural baby wear that is easy to change and gentle on your baby's skin—this also helps highlight adorable details like tiny toes in your baby photos. I have put together a handy Pinterest page with inspiration on coordinating your outfits for the whole family, including siblings, older siblings, and other children. Preparing siblings by coordinating their outfits and setting expectations will help everyone feel included and relaxed during the photo session. Including children and the whole family in some images creates lasting memories and captures the connection between each child and their parents.

When you arrive at your session, you can choose the colours that you love best and that will work in your house. I will then pick out some coordinating props, including hats, headbands for girls, layering fabrics and wraps, to compliment your colour scheme.

Rest assured, my studio is designed with your baby’s safety and comfort as the highest priority. The environment is kept warm and cozy to help your little one stay relaxed and sleepy. Professional lighting mimics natural light, creating beautiful images while ensuring your baby’s comfort. I maintain strict hygiene standards and use clean, soft props and blankets for every session. With 15 year experience as a newborn photographer, I will guide you through the process, making sure you and your baby feel comfortable and cared for throughout the entire session.
